When to repair a computer or buy a new one

This will be a quick post but it is a question that we get asked a lot.  When your computer breaks and it is not under warranty, should you fix it or buy a new one?

In our opinion, there are two primary factors that you have to consider.

Obviously, cost will play a part in the decision.  As a rule of thumb, if you are going to pay more than half the cost of a replacement computer, it is generally better that you get a new one.

Of course, this is assuming that you can afford a new one.  Keep in mind that you don’t necessarily have to buy the same computer as a replacement.  There may be computers out there that are a big upgrade from what you have, for a fraction of the price.

The other thing that you should consider is how old the computer is.  If it is a newer computer, buying a new computer may not be a big upgrade and you may be better off fixing it.

However, if you have a computer that is 3+ years old, it is probably more worthwhile to get a new one.
