What is SEO?

As you look to gain traffic for your company’s website, the term SEO gets thrown around quite often.  Even if you just own a personal blog and want to get more site traffic, SEO is relevant to you as well.  While you probably have an idea of what it is and what it can do for you, there are probably a few aspects that you still have questions about, and we hope to answer them in this blog post.

SEO, or search engine optimization, is the process of improving the visibility of your site in non-paid searches.  Basically, it is a way to increase the amount of views that you get through searches via search engines such as Google, Yahoo! or Ask.com.  The higher up (or earlier your website comes up in searches) your website is, the more views your website will get.  Keep in mind that SEO deals with NON-paid search results, not paid advertising through the search engine itself.

The clear benefit of SEO is that more customers will visit your website through web searches, which in turn leads to more customers.  However, you are fighting with your competitors for the valuable real estate found at the top of common Google searches.  Most people do not look past the first page of search results, so getting as high as you can, preferably onto the first page, is vital to gaining new customers through search engines.

One way to increase your website’s views is to include meaningful keywords within the content of your website as well as in the meta tags and description.  Search engines look for these keywords during their searches, so if your website contains these keywords, you will have a better chance of being seen.  However, no one likes to visit websites that spam you with keywords, so be careful to use your keywords with purpose to avoid turning off your audience.  Also, if your main webpage does not constantly generate new content, adding a blog for fresh content will help out a lot.  By constantly adding original content, you will provide something new for the search engine crawlers to find.

While SEO is a very complex subject, understanding the basics of the subject can go a long way.  Even by just utilizing these simple tips, you could help increase your website’s visibility on search engines.  If you have questions or want to learn more about SEO, please leave a comment below and we will be more than happy to help you out.
