What is Cloud Computing and How Can it Help Your Business?

There is a lot of confusion surrounding “The Cloud” and rightfully so.  Some commercials on TV mention it, but most of them assume that everyone knows what they are talking about.  To make it even more confusing, they also mention it in conjunction with their products.  For example, check out this Microsoft Ad for their Windows Live product:

After watching the commercial, do you know what the cloud is?  If you still don’t, not to worry, you are not alone.  Many are still confused.

Is it a new computer?  Is it a new software program?  No wonder people are confused.

But the Cloud is very cool so stay with me and I will tell you what it is and how it can help your business.

What The Cloud IS

So here it is….

The Cloud is…the internet.

Why don’t they just say “the internet”?  Well, where is the fun and geekiness in that?

I’m sure you already know about the internet.  However, most people don’t understand what you can really do via the internet and the benefits that are involved.

What You Can Do With The Cloud

So here is the best part, there are many things that you can do with the cloud.   Technology is advancing so rapidly that new tools and websites are literally popping up every day.

Here are some reasons how the Cloud can make your life easier:

  • Online automated data backup
  • Access your work computers from home
  • Online calendars that can send text message alerts and reminders to your mobile phone
  • Sync your contacts and documents between your computers, your phone, etc.
  • Access to your primary business tools via any computer on the internet
  • Cloud programs and services can be cheaper and easier to access than traditional products
  • And Much More!

What You Shouldn’t Do With The Cloud

Many Cloud applications are safe but any time you are sending information via the internet, there is always a small chance that your data could be compromised.

Therefore, here are some suggestions as to what to avoid:

  • Do not store super sensitive documents on online backup services.  Purchase a local backup drive and backup your data there.
  • Only deal with Cloud computing companies that have an excellent reputation and a commitment to data security.
  • Do not use unsecured connections to access your cloud programs
