Water, Water, Everywhere…On My Computer! What To Do If This Happens

One of the most frequent problems that we see when people come in to get their laptops fixed is that they have spilled coffee or another liquid on the laptop.

In this post, we will give you a few tips on what to do if this happens and how to do some simple tests to find problems.

An ounce of prevention…

What I mean is putting our coffee or soda next to our laptop when we are working.  It can’t be helped; we are going to do it from time to time.

However we should develop a habit keeping liquids away from splashing range of our laptop. It may take a little practice, but it is worth the effort.

If an accident does happen

Even if you are careful, a splash can happen.  Sometimes it may not even be your fault!  Here is what to do…

Immediately turn the computer over (keyboard down) and let the liquid drip out as much as possible.  Shut down the computer and wipe it with a paper towel or rag to dry it off.

Unplug the power supply and remove the battery.  Wipe those down too if they are wet.

Then let it sit and air dry for about 24 hours.  You could put it in front of a fan, but do not use heat to dry it.  That may do more harm than good.

The first test

After the computer has dried, try to turn it back on.  If it doesn’t turn on, double check that the power supply and the battery are properly connected.

If it still doesn’t work, then you may have a major problem on your hands.  Bring it down to our shop and we can diagnose the problem.  If there are repairs that need to be done, we can advise you of your options and the cost.

Whew, it turned on

If your computer did start up correctly, check to see that all plugs, switches and the keyboard and touchpad are working properly.  The most common problem with liquid spills is that the keyboard will stop working.

Sometimes, the problem may not arise for a couple days after the incident.

If your keyboard is not working, that is an easy fix.  You can watch videos online on how to replace your keyboard.  Replacements can be purchased online for a reasonable cost.

We can also do the work for you if you do not want to open your computer.

How about keyboard covers to protect against spills?

That is an option if you want to try it, but in our experience they are more of a hassle than a benefit.  We would recommend just being careful.

But if this does happen to you, now you know what to do.

Hopefully this post will help you remember what to do if you spill liquid on your laptop.  If you have any questions feel free to contact us.
