The Budget Way or the Right Way?

By the sound of the title of this post, it may seem like there are only two ways to solve your business technology problems.  Either you pay a lot of money to get the good stuff, or you buy the cheap stuff and suffer the consequences.

That is only partially true.  Let me show you what I mean.

The Budget Way

Sometimes business owners only focus on the initial equipment cost and do not take into account the total cost of ownership.  This is natural, as business owners we want to get the best deal to help our business succeed.

But the initial cost of the equipment is only half of the story.  Even if you purchase the lowest cost solution, you can end up paying much, much more than if you went with the slightly more expensive solution.

Example: Company buys cheap hardware when a business grade system is recommended. It created much more work to get the system setup, networked and secured than if the correct hardware was purchased from the beginning. From the features to the durability of the equipment, the minor cost savings were lost when additional costs came into the picture.

However for certain functions where budget is limited, we’ve found lower cost alternatives to fulfill the same function but still maintains the security, reliability and access requirements. There were some compromises like support of function limitations but accomplished the required functions.

The Right Way

Taking into account factors such as:

  • Reliability
  • Ease of installation
  • Compatibly with other technology
  • Maintenance cost

You need to keep in mind that the solution with the cheapest initial cost may incur much higher costs later.  Some of these hidden costs may include:

  • Increased consulting time
  • Harder to install
  • Harder to integrate with other systems
  • More day-to-day operational issues
  • Lower security
  • More down time, leading to lost revenue
  • Short life span leading to earlier replacement

But what is the right way given your budget?
