Should You Outsource Your IT?

Small businesses are always looking for ways to lower expenses, ourselves included.  One of the areas that companies look to save on is IT support.  Many businesses look to take care of their own IT support to avoid paying an IT company to do it for them.  This works well for some companies, but for others, taking care of your own IT could end up costing you money.

If you have less than five employees, an in-house IT staff person can probably manage your system and networks.  IT support is probably not too time-consuming or complex yet, so it is probably best to take care of your own IT support.  On the other hand, if you have over 50 employees, you should probably consider hiring a full-time IT staff person.  At this point, it is probably most efficient to employ someone whose sole job it is to take care of your IT.  If you find yourself in the middle with five to fifty employees, the management of your system and networks is probably too much for in-house support to take care of, but does not merit a full-time IT staff person.

The complexity of your IT operations also heavily impacts whether or not you can manage your IT in-house.  If your company runs critical business applications and servers, outsourcing your IT is probably best.  You can’t afford downtime as it significantly impacts your business, so outsourcing your IT will help keep your business running smoothly.  Not only will they manage your systems, an IT company can help you with your backup and data management as well as your network security and access.

Outsourcing your IT operations is not for everyone, and is a decision that should not be taken lightly.  If you are able to manage your own IT operations, you could save on what usually amounts to a significant cost.  However, if taking care of your IT in-house is taking up too much of your time or is too complex for you to fully understand, you should look into outsourcing your IT support.  While you will have to spend money upfront, you could potentially save a lot of money in the long run and it will allow you to focus on running your business, which is what you do best.
