Lengthen the Life of your Computer

Just like a car, you can extend the life of your computer by taking small steps to maintain the health and performance of your computer.  We are going to run through a few of the simpler steps that you can take to keep your computer in great shape.

One of the smartest things you can do to prevent damage to your computer, and for all your electronics for that matter, is to plug your computer into a surge protector.  Sudden spikes in electricity can heavily damage your computer, so purchasing a surge protector is a very smart investment.  Keep in mind that not all power strips are surge protectors, so make sure you know exactly what you are purchasing.

Cleaning out the contents of your computer can also improve the performance of your computer and allow it to not work so hard.  By constantly getting rid of files and programs that you don’t need anymore, you can help your computer run faster and longer.  You should typically use programs provided to you such as Desktop Cleanup Wizard and Disk Cleanup so that you don’t delete anything important.

While cleaning the files within your computer is important, physically cleaning your computer is just as vital.  Computers often collect dust which can block the air flow inside your computer, which can cause your computer to overheat.  Overheating can potentially damage your computer, especially for laptops, and making sure that there is adequate airflow within your computer is very important.  Also, while it is very tempting and convenient, using your laptop on your lap, couch or bed will also cause it to overheat.  If you like to use your laptop in bed, you should look into buying a laptop desk that you can place your laptop on to allow it to get the ventilation it needs while still being comfortable for you.

While no computer will last forever, performing these simple steps can extend the life of your computer without much of a hassle.  Not only do these steps lengthen the life your computer, they also allow your computer to run faster and smoother.
